Approved by the Ministry of Culture of China, the China International Chorus Festival is co-sponsored by the Bureau for External Cultural Relations, the Ministry of Culture of China, China Performing Arts Agency and China Cultural International Tours Inc. and organized by China Cultural International Tours Inc. Initiated in 1992, the festival is held biennially. Up to now, the festival has been successfully held five times, attracting numerous choruses from USA, Britain, France, Russia, Germany, Canada, Spain, Hungary, Poland, Japan, Singapore, Korea, Thailand, and Chinese Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. The scale and artistic level of each China International Chorus Festival is better than the previous one, and increasingly attractive to domestic and overseas professionals as well as people from all walks of life.
Choruses participating this year's festival are from four continents, Europe, America, Asia and Africa, and 29 Chinese provinces, municipalities, autonomous regions and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. The festival's organizing committee asked experts with China Chorus Association to examine all the submitted materials from applicants. After careful examination, the organizing committee has selected 49 domestic choruses and 18 foreign ones, including choruses from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. This year's festival surpasses all the previous ones in terms of the number of participant choruses and the artistic level, and it also ranks among top international chorus galas held in China.
According to the rules of China International Chorus Festival, the sixth festival is to be held in Beijing from July 27 to August 2, 2002. At 19:30 on July 27, the opening ceremony of this year's festival will be held in the Beijing Exhibition Center, with peace and friendship as its theme. Representatives from sponsoring organizations and the China Chorus Association, renowned professionals, reporters and all participant artists will attend the opening ceremony. The CCTV has been asked to conduct a 100-minute live show for this year's opening ceremony. The organizing committee arranges a series of activities of various kinds, including competitions, theater performances and outdoor performances, enabling more ordinary people to participate. Besides performances, this year's festival also has activities such as Master Class and Expert's On-The-Spot Comment.
To further increase the artistic content of the festival, promote the development of China's chorus and the exchange between China and foreign choruses, the organizing committee has invited the chairman of International Chorus Association to be the honorary chairman of the judging panel, and the vice chairman of International Chorus Association and the honorary chairman of Japan's Chorus Association to join the judging panel.
